The Mystery of the Train Murders
The Brain Cancer society has asked several Hollywood stars to participate in the biannual Brain Cancer Fundraiser in the Rocky Mountains. Morgan Freeman, Madonna, Lebron James, Brad Pit, Prince William, and Jim Carrey agreed to come to support and donate to this event. They all decide that they will come by a five star train to escape crazy fans and reporters. Jack Knight, extraordinary detective, and Padre Rufus, his faithful sidekick have been invited as well and have even been invited to join the celebrities on the five star train.
“Jack, I can’t believe we are actually going to be on the same train with all those celebrities.” exclaimed Padre Rufus.
“I know it is a lot to take in, but you must conduct yourself. We can’t have another incident like what happened in '95,” said Jack.
“You know that Seth Rogan pushed me,” said Padre Rufus.
Then the two sleuths took a cab to the train station. Where they met up with the celebrities. As they were waiting in the ticket line they overheard the conductor, a police officer, and the CEO of the train company discussing the safety of the celebrities on board the train.
“The celebrities will perfectly safe inside their cabins,” said Stephan Romiano or Otto as the employees liked to call him, given his rank as conductor.
“The cook, security guards, and myself will be the only ones with access to the celebrities cabins.”
“I’m still worried about their safety, if something were to them then my company crumble,” said the CEO Mr. Gibson.
“I understand your worries Mr. Gibson, but our squad will have constant surveillance over the train. We will have squads standing by to help if it is needed. Our protection is second to none!” explained the police officer.
“Okay, I feel a little better knowing that our ‘precious cargo’ will be secure,” said Mr. Gibson.
Next, Padre, and Jack boarded train with the celebrities. They made their way to their second class cabin, which was two train cars away from the celebrities. The cabins, not as fancy as the celebrities’ cabins, was still stunning. There were bunks in the corner with beautiful, red sheets made from silk. Further into the cabin, there was a tile-floor bathroom with a gold-rimmed toilet, velvet toilet paper, and satin bath robes. The main room was magnificent, with a polished oak wood table, a large dresser with a large plasma screen perched atop of it, a stocked mini-fridge, and a soft rug that covered the whole floor. Not to mention the beautiful the paintings that seemed to cover every wall.
“Check this out Jack, this place is like a mansion,” exclaimed Padre Rufus. “Whoa! This place has a gold-rimed toilet.”
“I know Rufus, this is really nice,” said Jack.
Next, the passengers of the train made their way towards the dinning car. The food was and elegant roast beef with many types of bread, vegetables, and fruits spread around the table.
Padre Rufus then said “This food is quite magnificent chef…”
“Brian,” said the chef appearing from what seemed to be thin air.
“And does Brian have a last name?”
“Nope, just Brian.”
After dinner all the passengers proceeded to go back to their cabins to sleep.
“I just met the most intriguing chef,” said Padre Rufus
“Oh really?” said Jack. “What was his name?”
“Brian.”
“Brian what.”
“Just Brian”
“Intriguing.”
“Brian was a very peculiar man. He kept trying to talk in a French accent and a bad one at that.” said Padre Rufus.
Then Padre Rufus and Jack Knight went to sleep. They then later woke up to the sound of a gut wrenching scream. Next they heard a roar and sinister laughter.
“Ah! What was that Jack? And don't tell me it was the wind.” exclaimed Padre Rufus.
“I don’t know Padre Rufus, but we better check it out,” said Jack Knight
Then the dynamic duo proceeded down the normal train cars all night searching for the source of the scream. When they arrived at the celebrity cars, they were denied access because of he two burly security guards blocking the entrance. Without clearance, they had no hope of getting into the celebrity cars.
The next day Jack and Padre Rufus were called down to the celebrity car because of a dire emergency. They entered a room in a state of chaos. The room was in a wreck, furniture overturned, dishes smashed, windows broken wide open, and finally a dead Brad Pitt, battered with knife wounds, lay dead on the floor. The same went for the rest of the celebs. Except for a knife stuck into the wall in Madonna’s room, there was no visible clues. Jack and Padre Rufus started to question the servants of the celebrities. There was also a young boy, by the name of Riley, was also found dead with a autograph book and a fountain pen. In the autograph book, next to the name of Lebron James, there was a message crudely scribbled into the book saying:
I WILL HAVE MY REVENGE!
“Look a this Jack,” said Padre Rufus “there looks like that knife in the wall might provide some clues to these horrible murders.”
“Yes Padre Rufus, I think you are right,” said Jack.
Jack pulled the blood-coated knife out of the decorative wall. One could tell just by looking at it that it was a cooking knife, generally used for mincing and chopping foods.
“Shall we have a word with our friend Brian?” asked Jack.
“I do believe we should.” answered Padre Rufus.
Jack and Padre went to the kitchen car. They came into the kitchen to discover a agonized Brian. His hands seemed to burst with pain every time he tried to prepare the meals.
“What’s the matter Brian?” Padre Rufus asked in a superior tone.
“Because I’ve been preparing all of the celebs favorite meals all night! And what a waste! I mean, rumor has it that all the celebs died. This company is going under, no doubt about it.
“And what about that bandage on your arm?” Jack asked suspiciously.
White gauze wrapped around his left hand, down to the middle of his forearm.
“I burnt myself on a hot pan while cooking some of the food. Then in my anger and pain, I stumbled back into a cart full of silverware and got cut from the serrated knifes.”
“Is that all?”
“Yeah. Its not like I killed everyone on the train.”
“Whatever you say Brian.”
Padre and Jack were pondered over the clues. They decided to interviewing more people would get them the facts they need. To do this they decided to question all of the people who had access to the celebrities car. They were halfway to their first witness when Jack thought of something.
“Lets watch the security video,” said Jack.
“That would be a great plan, but the murderer took out the security cameras,” replied Padre Rufus.
“Ah, then the murderer has made a fatal mistake. If the murderer took out all of the security cameras, then he must have had a key to get into the train’s controls and hardware system. So, the murderer must be a employee!”
“That is a keen deduction Jack, but if that is true, then the employee has to be of a higher position.”
“Very true. I think it is time we interrogate Mr. Romiano!”
Later, at the big memorial dinner Padre and Jack pulled Mr. Romiano into the men’s restroom to interrogate him.
“What is the meaning of this,” exclaimed Stephan.
“We were hoping you could tell us Conductor about the murders,” replied Jack Knight.
“What?… Oh and please, call me Otto” said the Conductor.
“Last night the security cameras were disabled and none of the murders were filmed” said Padre Rufus.
“What!? Boys, boys, this is new information for me,” Otto said nervously.
“Sir, with all due respect it had be an inside job because the culprit would have needed a pass and keys to get past the security guards guarding the security room. Not to mention that they would also have to have a pass and keys to get past the guards to get into the celebrity car.”
“Well I never knew of this,” exclaimed the awestruck conductor.
“Well keep your eyes peeled for anyone suspicious.”
The dynamic duo spent the rest of the day interrogating the remaining passengers and security guards. However, they found very little about the who this sinister murderer could be. The next day there were numerous reports of people seeing the conductor pacing the hallways and talking to himself.
“I believe that our friend the conductor is aloof Jack,” said Padre as they were heading to breakfast.
“I agree,” replied Jack. “I also have a hunch about who has not committed the crime.”
“Uh huh.”
“I think, but do not have hard evidence, that it is not the clumsy cook Brian.”
“Why not Brian? He had a motive and the equipments to commit the murders.”
“I believe that either the conductor or a security guard are the main culprits,” stated Jack.
“Why would it be a security guard?”
“Why wouldn’t it be the security guard?”
“Why would he go out and kill people if it would jeopardize his job? Even if he didn’t get caught, the business he works for would go under. No one would ever use their services again.”
“Good point sir.”
Next, Jack and Padre Rufus examined the alibi of the conductor.
“The conductor claims to have been asleep during the murders,” said Padre Rufus.
“I know. I think it is time for a little survey,” said Jack.
The two sleuths then walked to midday meal in the mess-hall, where they asked many people if they had seen the conductor at night on the day of the murders. Several of the passengers replied that they had not seen the conductor or even heard of him since they have been on the train, but as the they asked the last few passengers they came around to a lonely man by the name of Blake.
“Hello, I’m Jack Knight and this is Padre Rufus,” said Jack. “We were wondering if you saw the conductor on the night of the murders.”
“I did see him. He was dressed in dark clothes and was carrying a large, silver tray. On top of the tray, there was a cloth napkin that seemed to cover something. When I asked what it was, he sped past me and payed no heed to my inquiry.”
“Interesting. Anything else?”
“Yes. As he walked by, I caught a glance of his face.”
“And what was abnormal about his face?”
“There was a multicolored bruise on his cheek.”
“That’s impossible. We saw the conductor not a day ago and he had no such wound on his face. It’s not possible for that to recover that fast.”
“Believe me, I saw what I saw. He had a huge bruise on his face.”
The two friends left Blake to his clam chowder and went back to the scene of the crime. Back in Madonna’s room, a inventory report, used to make sure nothing was missing, told them something was missing… a bottle of make-up. Everything else was there. Baffled, unsure, and stuck, the sleuths went back in to the mess-hall.
“Why would anyone take a bottle of makeup?” Jack asked.
“Maybe to hide their ugliness,” Padre Rufus replied half-halfheartedly.
“Or maybe to hide a bruise!”
“That means-”
“The conductor stole the make-up!”
“But why?”
“Here is my theory: The conductor first sneaked into the kitchen and took a cooking knife, knowing that this would automatically point suspicion to one flustered chef, who spent the whole night prepping meals. After taking the knife, along with a tray and a cloth napkin, he silently made his way down to the first class cars. He made his way into each and every room, killing all of the first class riders. Hiding the knife under the cloth, he made his way down to the controls and hardware system where he erased the camera’s memory of the video. But he didn’t count on one thing, retaliation. He was attacked by some of the celebs and got injuries from the tussles, which would explain the overturned furniture. He had to steal make-up and apply it to his wounds to make it seem he had been untouched.”
It was late, way past sundown. The mystery had taken most of their week, but it was worth it. They found who the murderer is, and saved countless lives. They excitedly made their way to the conductors room. They knocked, but found no response. Another knock. Again they were greeted by a queer silence. They burst in, invitation or not. As the opened the door they found the conductor no where to be seen along with everything else in the room. Empty shelves decorated the room. The fridge was left wide open as if someone took all the food and left. The open window led the detectives to assume the conductor fled the train fearing he had aroused to much suspicion. Upon a coffee table, there was a note that confirmed Jack Knight’s deduction. The note said:
To our honored guests Mr. Knight and Mr. Rufus
As I am sure you have already found out, I am the murderer. It was all quite simple… allow me to explain. I used my pass to access the train’s controls and electronics. After arriving I shut down the security cameras and erased all of the memory from this week’s trip removing any evidence of the murders. Unfortunately, my task was not without its difficulties. After sneaking into Mr. Freeman’s room, I found him snacking from his fridge. An enraged Mr. Freeman came right after and a quarrel soon followed. I did, however, make quick work of him. This cycled repeated itself with other celebrities. I found one awake, they attacked, I fought them, the end. ‘But why would you do this?’ you may be asking yourselves. Do you know Mr. Knight and Mr. Rufus how it feels to be made fun of, taunted, and all together treated as a slave? I have been stepped on by the higher class people, the ‘cream of the crop’ if you will. It is absolutely horrid. It was a crime of emotion and rage. I don’t care how many companies I bring down. I WILL HAVE MY REVENGE.
With Homicidal Thoughts, Mr. Stephan ‘Otto’ Romiano
